🌰

Black walnut

📍 1 Apple Rd, Newark, DE 19711, USA
Black walnut Private but overhanging
🗓 Season: September · October
🔍 When is it ripe?
Harvest when the green husk turns yellow-green and the nut falls naturally or can be shaken loose. Wear gloves — the husk stains permanently. Remove husk immediately, then cure nuts in a cool, airy place for 2–3 weeks before cracking. Intensely flavoured.
Tree hangs over and under Apple Road overpass. It's either on the property owned by the developer (who will be turning it into new student housing) or owned by the railroad company, as it's right by the tracks. In either case I doubt anyone would bother someone picking up some walnuts that have fallen - just stay away from the tracks.
