🔍 When is it ripe?
Deep red haws (berries) develop from green. Ripe when dark red and slightly soft. Edible raw but mealy — better for haw jelly, syrup, or wine. Contains a large stone. Improve after first frost.
Several wild form hawthorns on the edge of Blackhawk Park, a park in the city of Madison. Not sure exactly when the haws ripen. Many flowers in late May - good for making medicine.
Sizeable thorns - 2 to 3 inches long. Watch yourself!
