Deep red and glossy; stem pulls cleanly. Taste is the best test — sweet and juicy when ripe, still astringent if picked too early.
There are wild cherrie trees along the Kay's Creek parkway around Hobb's reservoir. However, local know about it and pick them. Bring a device to pull down tall branches and you can get the ones the locals can't reach.
