🔍 When is it ripe?
Skin turns from green to yellow-orange starting at the base. Yields to gentle pressure. Sweet, floral aroma develops. Green papaya is eaten as a vegetable (unripe). Ripe fruit has orange flesh and black seeds inside.
There is a second purple berry bush growing directly next to the beautyberry that I am unable to identify, so please take caution in that you forage the proper plant. The beautyberry has significantly larger leaves than the impostor. There are some small red berries farther down the chain-link fence that are probably poisonous, but I am unsure. I also spotted some mysterious large fuzzy bean pods much further down, and the pink flowers at the very start of the garden are adored by monarch caterpillars. I believe there is also corky stem passionfruit growing due to the presence of gulf fritillary caterpillars.
