🍒
Chokecherry
📍 250 Avena Rd, Black Mountain, NC 28711, USA
🗓 Season: July · August
🔍 When is it ripe?
Small clusters ripen from red to very dark purple-black. Intensely astringent until fully dark; seeds and leaves contain hydrocyanic acid — cook or dry before eating in quantity. Best for jams and syrups.
Mid-sized chokecherry tree, fruit is difficult to reach so a stepladder may be required. On private property but overhanging a public road. No one will mind if you pick some.
