Common hackberry

Common hackberry Permitted by owner
🗓 Season: September · October · November
🔍 When is it ripe?
Small, round berries turn from orange-red to dark purple-black. Ripe when dark and slightly soft; sweet, date-like flavour with a hard seed. Persistent through winter — a valuable wildlife and emergency food. Eat fresh or dry and grind (seed included).
Prolific tree at the side of the building. The berries are currently falling off the tree- they are everywhere! Easy collecting. This is a 'safe places' facility. Ask the people inside the center before snooping around for edibles. I did, and they gave me the thumbs up :)
