elderberry Public
🗓 Season: August · September
🔍 When is it ripe?
Dark blue-black clusters when ripe. Cook thoroughly before eating — raw berries are mildly toxic. Ripe when all berries are dark and clusters hang downward.
ELDERFLOWER. This elder is just a few feet from the road, so access is not a problem. Pollution is not an issue here either. I think this is one of the most majestic elders in the village. It is shielded from the sun in the South by large horse chestnuts, letting the flowers come through slowly and gradually in the cooler shade. This makes it a tree you can count on to still have fresh flowers if you miss a chance in the season. Being set back from the road, it escapes the hedgerow pruning, so there are many sprays of flowers to collect within arm's reach. And many lower down for the kids. Typically flowers May-June and berries ripen between August-October.
