🔍 When is it ripe?
Leaves harvested year-round as a bay leaf substitute — much stronger than culinary bay, so use half as much. Ripe purple berries (September–November) can be roasted and eaten like chocolate-flavoured nuts after removing the skin.
It's a bay similar to the Caribbean Laurel but spicier. Also called Oregon Laurel. It is grown as far north as Canada but usually sticks to zone 6 and south.
