Shagbark hickory
📍 795F+VF Raintree Plantation, MO, USA
🗓 Season: September · October
🔍 When is it ripe?
Thick green husk splits into four sections when ripe. Nuts fall; gather from the ground. Rich, sweet, buttery flavour — worth the effort of cracking the very hard shell. Dry for 2–3 weeks.
Tons of shagbark hickory trees. Squirrels had gotten to them already, but saw husks in abundance under every tree.
