Valley oak
π 1501 Mendocino Ave, Santa Rosa, CA 95401, USA
Not a readily edible fruit until processed.
PROCESSING
There's instructions online but the basic idea is you stick these in your toilet tank (clean water! you can drink it in an emergency!), which basically acts as an artificial indoor stream to wash away the tannins and then soak some more out. In other words, to leach the tannins from the acorn. Then, you grind it. Then, you use it as a flour. There are probably other things you can do with it than grind it and use it as a flour, I don't know. But I had a bread made from acorn flour once, at an acorn processing demo, it was really good.
BACKGROUND
Acorns are a common traditional food, such as for native tribes in the region. They are also featured as a symbol and food source in a book by Octavia Butler. Parable of the Sower, I think.
