Plum
🗓 Season: August · September
🔍 When is it ripe?
Colour fully develops (purple, red, or yellow by variety) and a waxy bloom appears on the skin. Softens slightly at the tip. Taste-test for sweetness — European plums are better slightly soft; Japanese types can be harvested firmer.
Thicket of cherry-sized red plums on bushes at southern end of Oakmont Park. The park is also home to more wild plum thickets if you venture onto the dirt trails behind the main, mowed park area.
There are bird houses positioned near the plum bushes so be sure to save plums for the birds and other wildlife.
Not sure as to the species of the plums in Oakmont Park, but they seem to be a mix of either Prunus angustifolia (Chickasaw plum), P. gracilis (Oklahoma plum), or P. rivularis (Creek/hog plum).
