Rose
📍 A532, Crewe CW1, UK
🗓 Season: September · October · November
🔍 When is it ripe?
Rose hips (swollen seed pods) ripen to red or orange after flowering. Pick when fully coloured and slightly soft. Remove the seeds and hairs inside (irritating). Very high in vitamin C; excellent for syrup, tea, and jelly. Leave some for birds in winter.
A small, small quantity of rosehip bushes, growing along the pavement of the industrial estate on Macon way. When I say small, I mean two or three plants, tops.
Rosehips are a great source of vitamin C, and can be made into jelly, jam, syrup or soup; however, they must be processed carefully, as the hairs surrounding the seeds inside the plant are an irritant.
