🔍 When is it ripe?
Apple: Background colour changes from green to yellow or cream (variety determines final colour). Seeds inside should be brown. Flesh yields slightly to thumb pressure. A ripe apple releases with a gentle upward twist — no pulling. Check the ground for natural drops.
Rosemary: Evergreen herb — harvest sprigs year-round. Young, bright green shoot tips have the most flavour. Harvest in the morning after dew dries. Flowers (blue-purple) appear spring through early summer and are edible as a garnish.
Strawberry: Uniformly red with no white or green at the tip or shoulder. Strong strawberry fragrance even from a distance. Cap leaves (calyx) are fresh and green. Completely red flesh inside when cut. Wild strawberries are smaller but more intensely flavoured.
Strawberries grow along the alley fruiting June - August. Apples ripen in October. Rosemary can be harvested year round and chives are up from spring to fall. All are easily accessed from the alley, and there may be other fruit and vegetables accessible depending on the whim of the gardener (me). I am the resident there and I welcome pickers.
