🌰
Black walnut
📍 1846 Alabama St, Lawrence, KS 66044, USA
🗓 Season: September · October
🔍 When is it ripe?
Harvest when the green husk turns yellow-green and the nut falls naturally or can be shaken loose. Wear gloves — the husk stains permanently. Remove husk immediately, then cure nuts in a cool, airy place for 2–3 weeks before cracking. Intensely flavoured.
On the north side of 19th Street right in the middle of the block between Naismith and Louisiana. The tree is growing out of someone's backyard, but some of it hangs over the sidewalk.
