Large, mature princess tree. The princess tree has large heart shaped leaves that look like the native catalpa tree. It is a weedy invasive tree from central and western China. As a pioneer plant, it is one of the fastest growing trees in the world, its roots fix nitrogen in the soil, and the tree produces a thick shade and cannot handle shade itself. The lightweight seeds were used as a packing material in China before polystyrene packaging became common, causing the tree to spread across the world (notably in Japan and the eastern U.S.).
