Butternut Public
🗓 Season: September · October
🔍 When is it ripe?
Elongated green husks turn brown-black and fall. Wear gloves — stains like black walnut. Cure for 2–3 weeks. Mild, oily, and buttery — not as strong as black walnut.
Butternuts are native to the Quad Cities area and are a close relative of the Black Walnut. Butternuts look like an elongated Black Walnut and has a buttery flavor that is preferred by many over the common Black Walnut. (Credit, Chris Rice)
