Carob

📍 301 Pereira Dr, Irvine, CA 92617, USA
Carob Public
🗓 Season: September · October · November
🔍 When is it ripe?
Long, leathery pods turn from green to dark brown and dry on the tree. Ripe when completely dark brown, hard, and fragrant with a chocolate-like smell. Eat the pods (not the seeds) — naturally very sweet.
There are two large carob trees right next to each other (and a smaller one next to them but it didn't seem to fruit this year). The one closer to the parking lot has better fruit (thicker skins). They are all very easily climbable, but you probably won't need to because the branches are very low also. There are a few more carob trees down Pereira towards East Peltason. They can be dried and ground into a carob flour/powder. The green pods can also be processed for their pulp. They riped in the "wet" season.
