Hickory

📍 275 E Flat Hill Rd, Southbury, CT 06488, USA
Hickory Private but overhanging
🗓 Season: September · October
🔍 When is it ripe?
Green husks turn brown and split; nuts drop naturally. Gather promptly before wildlife. Kernels should be plump and cream-coloured. Dry before storing.
The hickory nut trees are along the uphill side of the road. The nut looks like shagbark hickory nut. The trees are on private property but nuts fall/roll to road edge. Take note there is no shoulder. Best to wear a bright clothing. Stay alert to oncoming traffic. Nut meats are small. Need a pick (e.g. a thin nail) to pick them out from the husk. 2021 was a mast year. 2022 will probably have less nuts. Need to wait and see what future years may bring.
