🔍 When is it ripe?
Common guava: Yellow skin, pink flesh. Ripe when fully yellow and very fragrant. Yields to gentle pressure. Soft spots indicate overripe.
Feijoa: Grey-green skin stays the same colour regardless of ripeness — rely on feel and drop. Ripe when it falls naturally from the tree or gives to gentle squeeze. Interior jelly turns clear from white. Intensely aromatic, pineapple-guava flavour.
Lime: Persian limes are harvested green and mature green; Key limes turn slightly yellow when fully ripe and very juicy. Heavy for its size and yields to light pressure. Green limes are still at peak acidity and fully usable.
Loquat: Clusters of orange-yellow fruit; ripe when fully orange with no green, yields to gentle pressure, and comes off the stem with a slight tug. Very sweet and aromatic when right — mealy if overripe. Short shelf life after picking.
Funded by a TD Green Space Grant in partnership with Arbor Day Foundation, the City of Orlando has planted a fruit grove at Ivey Lane park. Plants include: 2 apple trees [Golden Dorsett]; 1 lime [Red]; 2 grapefruit [Marsh White]; 2 orange [Navel]; 2 loquats [Japanese plum]; 1 kumquat [ Meiwa]; 2 guavas [Lemon]; 2 figs [Brown Turkey/Celeste]; 2 olives [Arbequina]; 2 cherry trees [Barbados]; 2 pineapple guavas [Sellowiana]. Neighborhood volunteers worked with city staff to plant trees. Trees were planted in October 2021 and will take several years to fruit. Be kind to our trees, they are for public benefit.
