🌳
elderberry
📍 998 Provo River Pkwy, Provo, UT 84604, USA
🗓 Season: August · September
🔍 When is it ripe?
Dark blue-black clusters when ripe. Cook thoroughly before eating — raw berries are mildly toxic. Ripe when all berries are dark and clusters hang downward.
The only edible parts of the elderberry are the ripe berries and flowers. Leaves, stems, bark, and roots are very toxic, so it's important to be vigilant about not including any of these when preparing elderberry for food. Berries are ripe when they're black.
