🔍 When is it ripe?
Thick green husk splits into four sections when ripe. Nuts fall; gather from the ground. Rich, sweet, buttery flavour — worth the effort of cracking the very hard shell. Dry for 2–3 weeks.
The squirrels are throwing down tons of hickory nuts, plenty of fresh ones in their husks all along the trails. Just don't be surprised if the squirrels yell at you. Careful not to get hit in the head by a falling nut, they sound like baseballs when they hit the ground.
