Shagbark hickory

Shagbark hickory Public
🗓 Season: September · October
🔍 When is it ripe?
Thick green husk splits into four sections when ripe. Nuts fall; gather from the ground. Rich, sweet, buttery flavour — worth the effort of cracking the very hard shell. Dry for 2–3 weeks.
Several trees in Orton Park. The ones near the basketball court seem to be yielding the most nuts in 2015. Haven't yet cracked the nuts I picked up but looking forward to it!
