Pawpaw
📍 N Henry St at Highland Park, Williamsburg, VA 23185, USA
🗓 Season: August · September · October
🔍 When is it ripe?
Green skin turns slightly yellow and gives like a ripe avocado. Custard-like, mango-banana scented flesh inside. Falls at the slightest touch. Very short shelf life — refrigerate and eat within days. Found throughout eastern North America.
This side of the road down to the creek is full of pawpaw trees. Most aren't fruiting, but I saw one with fruit relatively close to the road. I'm unsure of the status of this land, but I don't think it's private due to its location and proximity to the railroad. Many trees did flower, so there may be a need for more pollinators. The first fruiting tree I saw was pretty close to the blue sign.
