📍 Harold Washington Park, 5200 S Hyde Park Blvd, Chicago, IL 60615, USA
ginkgo Public
🗓 Season: October · November
🔍 When is it ripe?
Female trees only: fleshy, apricot-like fruit falls when ripe, emitting a very unpleasant rancid-butter smell. Wear gloves — the outer flesh causes dermatitis. The inner nut is edible; roast or boil after removing shells. Limit intake (toxins at high dose).
The only park in Chicago that the park district did mass plantings of female gingkos trees. Could it have been on purpose for the first black mayor's park? There are about 15-20 trees that produce a nice yield of Gingko "nuts" and you must be able to stand the smell to get them home and wash, or walk to the point with burlap sack and soak in the lake overnight.
