🔍 When is it ripe?
Dark blue-black berries on red stalks. Edible but rarely used. The bark and roots (root beer flavour) contain safrole — regulated. Young leaves can be dried and ground as filé powder for gumbo.
Greenbrier all over the place here! Lemon balm is along the southern edge of the wood, and many of the black cherries are immature. Also several other cherry varieties scattered around park. Witch-hazel - a few small trees along exit road, and a young sassafras nearby.
