Cornelian cherry dogwood

📍 2005 Beechwood Blvd, Pittsburgh, PA 15217, USA
Cornelian cherry dogwood
🗓 Season: August · September
🔍 When is it ripe?
Bright red olive-shaped berries. Very sour when first red — wait until they turn deep red and fall freely or can be shaken off. High in vitamin C. Good for jam, wine, and sauce.
Stand of cornelian cherries near entrance to Clayton Loop North trail. Most growing in the shade and producing large leaves and less fruit, but out in the open field behind the stand is one tree in full sun with abundant fruit. The shade trees ripen slower and will be best in early/mid August. The sun tree is ripe around the end of July.
