American elderberry
📍 109 Center Rd, Gray, ME 04039, USA
🗓 Season: August · September
🔍 When is it ripe?
Blue-black berries in flat clusters; cook before eating. Ripe when uniformly dark blue-black and heavy. Also note: elderflowers in June are edible raw and excellent for cordial.
Variety of elderberry on the left side of the road about 50’ in woods by river going towards Center road. Go into Japanese knotweed and to the left and across the river. Or on the right side of road on bridge there are tons of them but seem more visible. May want to ask property owner before harvesting. Flowers blooming beginning of July, berries in fall.
