🔍 When is it ripe?
Black raspberry (Rubus occidentalis): Deep purple-black; pulls free from the hollow centre. Strongly flavoured. Picks over about two weeks — check every couple of days.
Black walnut: Harvest when the green husk turns yellow-green and the nut falls naturally or can be shaken loose. Wear gloves — the husk stains permanently. Remove husk immediately, then cure nuts in a cool, airy place for 2–3 weeks before cracking. Intensely flavoured.
Butternut: Elongated green husks turn brown-black and fall. Wear gloves — stains like black walnut. Cure for 2–3 weeks. Mild, oily, and buttery — not as strong as black walnut.
A mature, planted windbreak of mixed butternut and black walnut can be found on the west side of the Cumberland museum grounds. The butternuts were healthy and bearing heavily when I visited in 2016. At the northern end of the windbreak are some black raspberries as well, rare in the Ottawa valley. There are also some scattered individual black walnut trees throughout the museum grounds, many of them apparently wild. The museum is technically private property, though nobody even seems to tend to the trees let along harvest from them, you may want to ask permission before picking.
