Common hackberry

📍 1957 180 S, Orem, UT 84059, USA
Common hackberry
🗓 Season: September · October · November
🔍 When is it ripe?
Small, round berries turn from orange-red to dark purple-black. Ripe when dark and slightly soft; sweet, date-like flavour with a hard seed. Persistent through winter — a valuable wildlife and emergency food. Eat fresh or dry and grind (seed included).
The fruit is green as it grows and turns red when it ripens. The ripe fruit of hackberries are small and have thin sweet skin around a hard seed. This seed is rich in protein and fats, but is extremely hard so don't try to crush with your teeth.
