🗓 Season: June · July · August
🔍 When is it ripe?
Allegheny serviceberry: Deep purple-black berries, very sweet. Ripe by mid-June in warm years. Pick when fully dark and slightly soft.
Black mulberry: Deep purple-black when ripe; intensely flavoured and juicy. Spread a tarp and shake the tree — ripe fruits fall immediately. Stains everything permanently — wear old clothes. Do not pick unripe red berries (mildly hallucinogenic).
Mulberry overlooks the train tracks in the back parking lot. Good producer. Many old serviceberry shrubs. Violets near the playground going down the ravine, only eat during the earliest blooming before they treat for pests. It's a busy apartment development, most people will assume that you live there.
