Black raspberry (Rubus occidentalis) · Raspberry
📍 179 Willow St, Albany, NY 12203, USA
🗓 Season: June · July · August
🔍 When is it ripe?
Black raspberry (Rubus occidentalis): Deep purple-black; pulls free from the hollow centre. Strongly flavoured. Picks over about two weeks — check every couple of days.
Raspberry: Deep red (or gold/yellow for golden varieties) and slides off the receptacle — the hollow centre is the tell. Does not pull: a ripe raspberry separates at a touch. Extremely fragile; use within hours of picking.
There are also red honeysuckle nearby, which are toxic. Raspberries are pretty obvious, and honeysuckle tastes immediately repulsively bitter, so it's a hard mistake to make. Still, use discretion.
