🍒
Chokecherry
📍 5307 Hynds Blvd, Cheyenne, WY 82009, USA
🗓 Season: July · August
🔍 When is it ripe?
Small clusters ripen from red to very dark purple-black. Intensely astringent until fully dark; seeds and leaves contain hydrocyanic acid — cook or dry before eating in quantity. Best for jams and syrups.
About 4 ft. (1.2 m) tall; leaves a little eaten by bugs. Shrub is behind a church. Take that for what you will. The cherries are sweeter more towards the autumn, but birds get to it too.
