🔍 When is it ripe?
Unlike apples, pears ripen from the inside out. Harvest when the skin colour lightens and the fruit separates with a gentle upward twist. Ripen off the tree at room temperature — leave on a counter until the neck yields to thumb pressure.
Prolific but overgrown pear tree.
At SE corner of parking lot for Round Lake Area Park District Teen Center. Enter from Orchard Lane if driving. No fences.
Area used to be adjoining private home lots; pear tree was already established when Park District purchased the properties.
Pears are a solid green, decent flavor and texture, and on the small side. Some tactical trimming-back of the the last several year's worth of growth would probably help both taste and size.
No problem with casual/"drive-by" picking, but be aware that this location is very near the Round Lake Area Park District Ranger HQ. Extensive picking, or tree maintenance, should be pre-approved by the Park District.

BTW...the wooded area directly to the east contains scattered blackberry canes.
