Scarlet hawthorn
Cragaegus coccinea (also known as C. pedicellata) - common names include fireberry hawthorn or scarlet hawthorn. There are two trees directly beside each other on either side of this pathway.
This species of hawthorn produced considerably large fruits (known as haws) that are mealy and sweet when ripe in late summer. These have the same structure as a small apple (fibrous core with a cluster of seeds near the centre) and are rich in pectic. Great for fresh eating or used in preserves.
