American persimmon

📍 BWI Trail, Glen Burnie, MD 21061, USA
American persimmon Public
🗓 Season: October · November · December
🔍 When is it ripe?
Must be fully ripe (very soft, almost jelly-like) before eating. Harvest after first frost or when naturally falling. Dark orange to purple when ready. Rich, caramel-sweet flavour.
Many American Persimmon trees along the BWI Trail. Very old, well established, and loaded with fruits. They have to be the sweetest of all fruit I have tasted. The flavor is like a candied orange peel or like a caramel-dipped apricot. Be very careful eating them because, despite their sweet as brown sugar flavor, they can be super astringent. They need to be mushy as a bruised peach, or they will dry out your mouth and throat. Hard to tell because it doesn't happen immediatly. The seeds especially have more of this drying substance around them.
