🗓 Season: August · September · October
🔍 When is it ripe?
Turns from green to red, orange, or yellow depending on species. Ripe when skin gives slightly and colour is fully developed. Use tongs and burn off the tiny glochid spines with a flame or rub in sand before handling. Sweet, mild flesh.
person who brought in nopales cactus is willing to share pads with whoever wants it - just go up to them and ask. The pads will bud very quickly and easily, and they're edible - provided the skin and needles are scraped off. It's better to wash it first to take off the needles and then remove the skin. When combined with water, it's a mentally clarifying drink. The fruit, while edible, hardly ever ripens fully.
