🥭
Common mango
📍 845 NW 3rd Ave, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33311, USA
🗓 Season: May · June · July · August
🔍 When is it ripe?
Fragrant at the stem end; yields to gentle pressure. Colour varies by variety. Ripe when fragrant and slightly soft throughout.
This neighborhood between N Andrews Ave and NW 5th Ave (going east to west) and NW 6th St and E Sunrise Blvd (going south to north) is a good neighborhood for foraging mangos. There are a lot of empty lots with mango trees on them. There are some large, minimal fiber varieties and some small, very fibrous varieties to pick from. I was there mid June 2019 and found trees at different stages from not ideally ready, to perfect timing. My experience is that June and July is a good time for harvesting, but that window could be larger.
I visited over 50 trees in this area and nearby streets and am not entering all of the trees. There are so many mango trees and with some exploration the bounty is there to be harvested and shared. Mangos are so prolific in this area that you can collect hundreds and hundreds in a weekend. Please be respectful in all of your interactions.
