🔍 When is it ripe?
Avocado: Avocados ripen off the tree, not on it. Harvest when full-sized and skin darkens (Hass: dark green to black). Test by removing the stem button — green underneath means not ready, yellow-green means close, brown means overripe. Ripen at room temperature for 3–7 days.
Common guava: Yellow skin, pink flesh. Ripe when fully yellow and very fragrant. Yields to gentle pressure. Soft spots indicate overripe.
Papaya: Skin turns from green to yellow-orange starting at the base. Yields to gentle pressure. Sweet, floral aroma develops. Green papaya is eaten as a vegetable (unripe). Ripe fruit has orange flesh and black seeds inside.
Pitanga: Ribbed, cherry-sized fruit turns from green → orange → red → deep burgundy-purple. Sweetest and least resinous when deepest purple-black. Very soft when ripe; falls at a touch. Short shelf life — eat within 24 hours.
We are a group called COLETIVO 1207 that practicing voluntary actions of art and urbanism for the Betania neighborhood and region at Belo Horizonte city, Minas Gerais, Brazil. One of the actions is the garden cultivation in an area where people throw garbage and rubble.
The area is just down the street, has no fence and all have access. Behind this area has what was once a river, it is now a dirty and full of sewage. In the region there are still many springs that are fading because of urbanization without planning.
