🔍 When is it ripe?
Apple (Malus): Background skin colour shifts from green toward yellow; seeds turn brown when ripe. Fruit separates from the spur with a gentle upward twist. Aroma develops near the base. Wild Malus fruit is often small and tart — excellent for cider and jelly.
Damson plum: Small, oval, dark blue-purple. Intensely tart raw — best after first frost or for cooking. Fully ripe when skin darkens completely and fruit gives to pressure. Excellent for jam and gin.
Blanchmans Farm Nature Reserve, can be accessed from multiple entrances, public access. Many damson and bullace/sloe trees grow here and aren't harvested by the landowners. There are also several wild apple trees spread throughout the nature reserve. Plentiful blackberries, as well as rosehips and hawthorns. I once found a Greengage tree but upon return it had been cut down - there may be others hidden.
