Himalayan blackberry

📍 Astoria Riverwalk, Astoria, OR 97103, USA
Himalayan blackberry Public
🗓 Season: July · August · September
🔍 When is it ripe?
Large, fully black berries. Same cues as common blackberry: comes free easily, no red core, dull rather than shiny. Vigorous canes — protect arms when harvesting.
Extremely invasive, very delicious (great for jam and pie) and VERY plentiful all along the River Walk. This is a pest species. Herbicide is used West of pier 39 to control population. Native Oregon blackberries (Rubus ursinus) also appear in the location, often out-competed by the invasive armeniacus. Ursinus has smaller, finer leaves and fewer thorns, and is sweeter in taste (and should, ideally, be allowed to propagate).
