🗓 Season: June · July
🔍 When is it ripe?
Deep red and glossy; stem pulls cleanly. Taste is the best test — sweet and juicy when ripe, still astringent if picked too early.
About five elderberry trees are growing at one of the trail heads (I forget the name, but it's the one past the outdoor amphitheater). There are also wild cherry trees in the area. One is in the parking lot, and another can be found up a hill past the elderberry grove. You can identify the cherry trees by crushing the leaves and smelling them. They should smell like almonds/marzipan. Be careful to only eat the fruit as all other parts contain cyanide. The blue elderberry should be nontoxic, but it's better to cook them just in case you're unsure.
