🔍 When is it ripe?
Cherry plum: Turns red, yellow, or purple depending on variety; flesh gives slightly under thumb pressure. Taste-test — ripe ones are sweet-tart with little astringency. Drops easily from stem when gently twisted.
Muscadine: Large, bronze or purple berries; thick skin. Ripe when fully coloured and falls freely from the vine with a shake. Very sweet and musky; thick skin usually discarded. Harvest by shaking clusters over a bucket.
There are tons of different edibles here located at Wekiva Park. Lots of concrete trails, as well as dirt trails to walk through with many different plant types. I've found Greenbriar or Smilax, Purslane, Betony Root, Peppergrass and different species of Wood Sorrel. At least three different grape species, Blackberry, Deerberry which is a cousin of the Blueberry, and Beautyberry grows rampant throughout the park and is widely available. I highly encourage you to explore the entire park and go down all of the trails, even if it rains (which it often does in Florida) Note:: Coral Ardisia is a bright red berry bearing fruit and is toxic/invasive. If you happen to see any during your travels, please try and collect all the berries from the bush and destroy the plant as best you can. Destroy the berries afterward.
