Black walnut · European pear (Pyrus communis 'Bartlett')
📍 10144 Lakeshore Rd 311, Staples, ON N0P 2J0, Canada
🗓 Season: September · October · August
🔍 When is it ripe?
Black walnut: Harvest when the green husk turns yellow-green and the nut falls naturally or can be shaken loose. Wear gloves — the husk stains permanently. Remove husk immediately, then cure nuts in a cool, airy place for 2–3 weeks before cracking. Intensely flavoured.
European pear (Pyrus communis 'Bartlett'): Classic Bartlett: skin turns yellow-green from green. Harvest when the neck near the stem gives to light pressure. Ripens off the tree in 4–7 days at room temperature.
A giant old Bartlett Pear tree and several Black Walnut trees are growing on my property. We can't harvest everything ourselves so please come knock on my door and ask to take some for yourself. I require that you get permission first as we have a dog that runs around off-leash sometimes.
