🔍 When is it ripe?
Unlike apples, pears ripen from the inside out. Harvest when the skin colour lightens and the fruit separates with a gentle upward twist. Ripen off the tree at room temperature — leave on a counter until the neck yields to thumb pressure.
There are dozens of trees along Shelmartin Avenue and Brian Road growing miniature pears. Many branches are out of reach but you should still get a decent haul with a litter picker and maybe a stool or even a stepladder.
