🔍 When is it ripe?
Cherry plum: Turns red, yellow, or purple depending on variety; flesh gives slightly under thumb pressure. Taste-test — ripe ones are sweet-tart with little astringency. Drops easily from stem when gently twisted.
Downy serviceberry: Small, dark purple berries. Sweet with a hint of almond. Ripe when uniformly dark and separates easily from the stem.
Sour cherry: Bright to deep red, slightly translucent. Firmer than sweet cherries when ripe. Strong tart flavour — avoid if still pale or streaked green. Harvest before birds; fruits hang briefly after colouring.
Wine raspberry: Deep red, sticky, wine-flavoured. Ripe when dark red and separates easily from the stem. Good raw or for making wine and jam.
Serviceberries in library landscape beds arrive in late May and June. They are popular with the cedar waxwings and cardinals. Tend to go bad with apple rust quickly if it's humid. Wine berries are all along the parking lot verges, ripe in late August. They're getting stressed since new development gobbled up more bird berry and deer browsing territory.
