Buartnut
There are two trees here which I believe to be buartnut, which is a cross between the native butternut (Juglans cinerea) and the Japanese walnut or heartnut (J. ailantifolia). At least one of these trees produces prolific crops of seed every second or third year.
The hulls of the seeds are tapered at both ends to a blunt tip and are covered in sticky, glandular hairs. The shells are quite thick and an ordinary nut cracker won't cut it. The kernels are sweet, oily and delicious.
