Downy serviceberry

Downy serviceberry Public
🗓 Season: June · July
🔍 When is it ripe?
Small, dark purple berries. Sweet with a hint of almond. Ripe when uniformly dark and separates easily from the stem.
Dozens of Juneberry/Serviceberry plants. This one is on the southwest corner of the intersection of 19th Street and 4th Avenue. You will find another one across 19th Street along the side walk at the corner of the Rock Island Public Library's Downtown Branch. All four corners of this intersection have Juneberry/Serviceberry plants. Once you find these plants and are able to identify the Juneberry/Serviceberry you will notice that the City of Rock Island planted dozens of them on the one way streets of 4th and 5th Avenues between the Centennial Bridge and the Arsenal Bridge (15th Street and 24th Street). If you walk on those two roads you will find at least one Juneberry/Serviceberry plant on each block. The delicious berries are ripe around June 10th.
