American persimmon

American persimmon Public
🗓 Season: October · November · December
🔍 When is it ripe?
Must be fully ripe (very soft, almost jelly-like) before eating. Harvest after first frost or when naturally falling. Dark orange to purple when ready. Rich, caramel-sweet flavour.
Two or three trees here along path, one of them fruiting well in 2012. This year (2014) it looks like one of the others will have a fair amount of fruit as well. These are fun but the seeds take up a huge amount of the fruit, leaving little room for flesh . . . so more of a make-pudding fruit than an eating out of hand fruit. Also it's hard to judge when to pick them as the astringency is unreal when they're not ripe, but they are really only ripe when they fall to the ground. But fun.
