Black mulberry

📍 209 W North St, Itasca, IL 60143, USA
Black mulberry Public
🗓 Season: June · July · August
🔍 When is it ripe?
Deep purple-black when ripe; intensely flavoured and juicy. Spread a tarp and shake the tree — ripe fruits fall immediately. Stains everything permanently — wear old clothes. Do not pick unripe red berries (mildly hallucinogenic).
A handful of mulberry trees along the edge of the park mixed with other vegetation. Trees are on the east and south perimeter. There are many low hanging branches for easy picking. I found the Eastside trees have larger fruits; the Southside ones are both tiny and harder to get to due to brambles.
