Crabapple
📍 3440 Maple Dr, Fort Dodge, IA 50501, USA
🗓 Season: August · September · October
🔍 When is it ripe?
Small apples ripen from green to red, yellow, or orange by variety. Very tart raw but excellent for jelly and cider. Ripe when the colour is fully developed and the fruit lifts off with a gentle twist.
On USPS property are five large crabapples, loaded with thousands of beautiful big, largely flawless tart fruit up to an inch in diameter.
Use them to make pectin, a decadent hard cider, or simply quarter them and dehydrate for a candy-like treat reminiscent of sour patch kids.
Best time to harvest is Sunday mornings.
